A Phlebotomist is a health professional who obtains and processes blood samples as well as other laboratory samples. Phlebotomists are employed in a variety of settings, including hospitals, medical and diagnostic laboratories, blood donor centers, and doctors’ offices.

Program Overview

The Red Rocks Community College Phlebotomy Certificate program is an exceptional pathway for students seeking to enter healthcare with in-demand skills and hands-on training. This program is designed to prepare graduates for employment as Registered Phlebotomy Technicians (RPT), who play a vital role in healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics, and diagnostic laboratories.

Students will gain comprehensive knowledge of medical terminology, phlebotomy techniques, and laboratory procedures in just one semester, culminating in an immersive internship experience. The curriculum includes:

  • HPR 1040: Comprehensive Medical Terminology (3 credits): Build a solid foundation in medical language and concepts essential for healthcare professionals.
  • HPR 1020: Phlebotomy (4 credits): Develop the skills to perform blood draws, process specimens, and ensure patient safety.
  • HPR 1080: Phlebotomy Internship (3 credits): Apply your skills in a real-world setting, gaining 135 hours of hands-on experience under the guidance of experienced professionals.

Students must be at least 18 years old to enroll in the program. Additional requirements include proof of immunizations, black scrubs, a signed physician’s health form, and successful completion of a background check and drug screening prior to the internship. Must have BLS Professional Certification that is valid throughout the internship. 

To progress, all courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or higher.

Graduates of the program are eligible to take the national AMT (American Medical Technologists) certification exam, earning the Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) credential. Additional Program Information

The Phlebotomy Certificate program is designed to prepare students for employment as phlebotomists in the healthcare industry. The program provides hands-on training in phlebotomy, point-of-care testing, and laboratory procedures. Upon completing the program, students can take the national AMT (American Medical Technologists) certification exam, earning the Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) credential. 

Program Requirements

  • Total Credits: 10
  • Courses must be completed within a semester to ensure timely completion and graduation. Failure to follow the recommended sequence may prevent program completion.

Required Courses

HPR 1040 | Comprehensive Medical Terminology (3 Credits)

HPR 1020 | Phlebotomy (4 Credits)

HPR 1080 | Phlebotomy Internship (3 Credits)

Total 10 Credits

Students complete the program in one semester:

  1. HPR 1040: Comprehensive Medical Terminology (3 credits)
  2. HPR 1020: Phlebotomy (4 credits)
  3. HPR 1080: Phlebotomy Internship (3 credits)
    • HPR 1080 is taken during the second half of the semester, following the 10-week accelerated in-person Phlebotomy course (HPR 1020).
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Proof of the following is required before starting the program:
    • Criminal background check and health/drug screen (completed at the student's expense through the approved RRCC program) 
    • Physician’s approval/health form, current, up-to-date immunizations, including hepatitis B immunizations
  • The 135-hour internship (HPR 1080) must be completed within the last 4 weeks of the semester.
  • Students must plan to complete internship hours no less than 4 days per week to complete on time.
  • Current BLS for professional certification (proof required before internship).
  • Students are required to purchase black scrubs for the program.
  • All courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better to progress through the program.
  1. Perform phlebotomy and related laboratory procedures competently and safely. 
  2. Sit for the national AMT (American Medical Technologists) certification exam, earning the Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT) credential.
