Emergency Medical Responder

The Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) is a pre-hospital medical provider whose primary role is to initiate immediate lifesaving interventions to patients who access the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system. Individuals certified at this level have the basic knowledge and skills required to provide care to patients while awaiting the arrival of an ambulance, and to assist higher level providers at the scene and while enroute to the hospital.

EMRs are often the first EMS providers on scene and perform basic interventions with minimal equipment. They must quickly assess the patient’s needs, implement care, and request additional resources. EMRs are part of a comprehensive EMS system, but they should not be the highest level of care available and are not allowed to transport a patient in the back of an ambulance.

This course and level of training is ideal for anyone wishing to obtain comprehensive advanced first aid skills. Participants may include police officers, park rangers, camp counselors, and volunteer firefighters. It is also an excellent preparation course for becoming an EMT.

The format for the class is approximately half lecture and half small group skills practice. The only prerequisite is age 16 by the first day of class.

Upon successful completion of the course students are eligible to take the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) EMR examination. After obtaining NREMT certification you will be able to apply for Colorado EMR certification*.

*CPR certification is required by the state of Colorado to obtain a state EMR certification.  HPR 1011 provides the American Heart Association CPR for BLS providers training and certification.  Unless currently certified in CPR the student should register for this course as well.

You can refer to the academic calendar for specific dates regarding when registration opens each semester. Registration is open enrollment, and students are admitted to the program on a first-come, first-served basis. Students can enroll by logging into their account on “The Rock” and registering for the appropriate courses.   Watch this short video on how to register for classes in Navigate
